Despacho n.º 4623/2004 (2.' série). - Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa nasceu em Lisboa, no Largo de São Carlos, em 13 de Junho de 1888 e morreu no ano de 1935. Passou alguns anos na África do Sul, onde aprendeu a língua inglesa, na qual viria a escrever parte da sua poesia.
A sua primeira produção em português foi publicada na revista Águia (1912).
Juntamente com Mário de Sá-Carneiro, Almada Negreiros e outros, forma um grupo de jovens poetas e artistas que viriam a ser os introdutores e doutrinadores do Modernismo em Portugal. As suas obras, publicadas na maior parte postumamente, reunindo as publicações dispersas pelas revistas Orpheu, Centauro, Portugal Futurista, Exílio, Contemporânea, Athena, Presença, incluindo os muitos inéditos que faziam parte do seu espólio literário, são as seguintes: Mensagem (1934, o único volume publicado em vida do autor); Poesias e Poemas Dramáticos de Fernando Pessoa; Poesias de Álvaro de Campos, Poemas de Alberto Caeiro; Odes de Ricardo Reis; Poesias Dramáticas; Poesias Inéditas (1930-1935; 1919-1930); Quadras ao Gosto Popular.
A poesia de Fernando Pessoa, ele mesmo ou os seus heterónimos, representa uma conciliação entre a criação poética e a reflexão filosófica. As suas vivências firmam-se no mistério da existência, no desejo de atingir o absoluto, transpondo o que é aparente, ilusório, transitório. Mas a sua poesia, construída e cerebral, não nasce apenas da fria inteligência ou do pensamento dedutivo: exprime fundamentalmente a solidão interior, a frustração do desejo, a inquietação perante o enigma de ser, o tédio. Exprime ainda a tensão dialéctica, o 'diálogo interno' do seu mundo interior, no qual podemos ver a génese dos seus heterónimos.
