Tem mais virtude quem, provocando dialéctica, provoca irritação e com ela a evolução da autonomia, do que aquele que, sem contradição, caminha sobre um tapete de flores - e ao fechar a porta deixa tudo igual como quando entrou.
Fixação do assunto: representação da República nos Açores.
Personagens: PICO e SAVANAROLA, homens cultos e de espírito aberto, um da Ilha do Corvo e outro de S. Jorge; FLORENÇA, do Faial, esposa do primeiro. De visita à Ilha Terceira, estão os três a conversar na marina d'Angra.
Os factos são quase todos reais. Apenas alterámos os nomes.
FLORENÇA: - "Hoje apetecia-me algo de diferente"...
PICO: Olhando para o seu amigo - Temos então, nos termos da Constituição, uma nova nomenclatura: Representante da República!
SAVANAROLA: - Vem, novamente, meu caro amigo, com o seu discurso de quem não aceita que existe de facto um novo cargo que já não é Ministro da República, mas Representante.
PICO: - Perdemos, ambos, tempo a discutir isso. Para si basta a mudança de nomenclatura, mas para mim isso não basta.
SAVANAROLA: - Sabe tão bem como eu que foi alterado mais do que isso, a competência administrativa quanto aos serviços do Estado na Região. Isso, para mim e para a maioria dos intelectuais da praça, é substancial...
PICO: - Seria assim, efectivamente, se o Representante da República fosse um agente da autonomia equivalente a um dos órgãos próprios da região. Mas não. Em rigor, a competência administrativa não era uma questão autonómica mas meramente estadual, embora devesse sê-lo precisamente ao contrário! Mas falemos de outras coisas porque já cansa discutirmos essa banalidade - que a história depois dará razão ao meu amigo.
SAVANAROLA: - Concordo. Mas se o parlamento não nos mostra nada na Horta para discutirmos, se o executivo nada de futuro nas ilhas produz para analisarmos, resta-nos, entre outras questões da sociedade açoriana, este assunto. Afinal estamos a falar da entidade que assina as leis regionais!
PICO: - É verdade. Sabe que, apesar da sociedade mostrar o contrário, não entendo que o mandato do ainda Ministro da República cessante tenha sido muito bom...
SAVANAROLA: - Como não?!
PICO: - É como lhe digo. Laborinho Lúcio foi um bom Ministro da República, mas teve e tem ainda, como Ministro da República cessante, os seus defeitos.
